Match Report by Tony Middleton
Amos is in the starting line up, along with
John Purdie who had missed the previous match due to injury. At the
turnstiles, Matt was demanding money with menaces - £1 for the jackpot
ticket, £1.50 for the programme and £2 for the Xmas raffle. It was important
to win the toss as the bright sun was very low and cascading downfield.
Urchins lost the toss and had to kick into the glare. A slowish start
although Janney made a good run along the right and sent in a good cross,
which Stroud headed away, but Foyewa followed up to power in a shot which
was touched out for a corner. Janney took the kick, found Purdie, whose
first time shot cannoned back off a defender. A long upfield ball by Bostock
found Foyewa who was almost through but Gilbert nipped across to tackle, and
a Glozier centre from the left found Lee whose header was saved by Anfossy.
Foyewa found space for himself with a quick twist, and his low cross into
the middle was well held by a diving Anfossy. Enfield had not threatened
although Stanley made a lot of ground before slotting the ball through to
Hughes , but McFarlane played the ball away, up to Foyewa whose cross found
Lee, whose header was deflected for a corner. Tomlinson moved upfield,
exchanged a quick pass with Lee, and then crossed into the goalmouth where
Lee was just beaten to the ball by Anfossy. A Tomlinson pass to Lee gave Lee
a good opening, and he made ground and picked out Cross, whose shot was well
saved. Back to Cross, and over to Foyewa and Anfossy made an excellent save
from Amos’ header.
A long ball from Foyewa was just a little too long for Janney to reach, and
then Cross found Lee who sent Foyewa away on the right, his run being
crowded out by a massed defence.
Enfield scored with what was their first attack, when Marlon Stuart made a
good run through from the left, his shot beat Brightly and came back off the
post to safety – only for the ball to cannon back into the net off of DANNY
GLOZIER, the goal being met by almost total silence. Foyewa gave Styles a
half chance with a good flick, but Styles’ low shot was wide of the goal,
and then came the turning point, almost on half time, when Brightly made an
excellent backwards diving save to touch a goalbound header over the bar.
There was just time for Glozier to float over a high centre, too high for
Lee, as the half time whistle went, surprisingly early considering the
amount of stoppages.
Could Urchins pull anything back? The half time opinions differed, as most
teams in yellow tended to pack their defence and simply hope to hand on –
and Enfield were in yellow. Max announced the winning jackpot number and an
Urchins supporter walked off with £100. And Matt’s threats must have worked,
as all programmes were sold out long before the start.
Second half and Gasper came on to add an extra forward to the mix. Urchins
looked sharper, with Glozier making ground and sending over a high ball
which Anfossy plucked off the head of Lee. A Janney free kick – one of many
– almost reached Tomlinson but Stroud cleared well, the ball being gathered
up by Gasper who cut inside and Borghys did well to cover. Janney then made
a good run, turned in from the right and powered in a shot which Anfossy
tipped over. The pressure was on, and it was Janney again, this time finding
AINSLEY GASPER, who turned and fired the ball home to level the scores. One
way traffic from now on, Janney’s free kick finding McFarlane whose header
was well saved by Anfossy. Enfield briefly mounted an attack of their own,
but Bound’s shot went high and well wide. Lee won a corner, and then a
Foyewa cross found Lee, who again went close with a header. A long ball
upfield by Bostock found Gasper and Lancaster’s wild clearance went out for
a corner. Bostock again, and his run through the middle was halted by Beale
who was fortunate to escape a yellow card from the ultra lenient referee,
and from Janney’s free kick Foyewa’s shot went out for a corner which was
eventually scrambled away. Janney then found Cross and thence to Gasper
whose shot was turned around the post, and from the Glozier’s corner the
ball eventually found its way to AINSLEY GASPER who scored his second goal
of the match.
A great solo run by Cross saw his shot narrowly wide of the post, with the
entire East Side screaming goal, but the third goal was not long in
following. With Southon and Parker now on the pitch, Enfield were defending
in depth and the referee was playing a continuous tune on his whistle, but
they could do nothing when MARK JANNEY moved in on goal and hammered the
ball home, ‘One nil and you messed it up’, sang the East Side (edited
version), as Enfield grew increasingly desperate, but it was now all
Urchins, with Janney shooting just wide from Gasper’s through pass. In
stoppage time Donnelly was fortunate to escape any form of card after a
flare up, but at the final whistle, the same player was shown the yellow
card, but by then Urchins were home and dry. And then came the news – Harlow
had lost, and Urchins were three points up with a game in hand.
